Music

May 16, 2019 by Denise Maurice

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” (Plato). Music is part of our creative curriculum at St. Peter’s, and children are encouraged to develop a love of singing and music through a varied music curriculum. Lessons are planned using a variety of sources, including Music Express and Charanga, and whole class teaching aims to enable pupils to perform, learn to sing and to understand how music is created through tuned and un-tuned percussion.

Our pupils have the opportunity to receive whole class teaching from a specialist music teacher in Y4, and engage in a variety of singing opportunities: Y2 and Y5 take part in the Chanctonbury Singing Festivals, Y6 sing at the O2 and as part of the Y6 end of year Production, and KS1 join together to sing for the Nativity produced annually. Many family members also join us regularly for whole school worship and singing at our church services in St. Peter’s. Budding musicians are invited to take part in the annual Spring Concert where they are able to showcase their talent. Traditionally we have had performances on the piano, strings and woodwind; and Singing Club and Guitar club regale the audience with pieces from their diverse repertoire.

St. Peter’s offers many extra-curricular musical opportunities with an after school Guitar Club and Singing Club led by teachers. West Sussex Music Services and a private music teacher are able to offer peripatetic music lessons in: violin and viola, flute, drums, guitar, piano and woodwind (saxophone, clarinet etc). The children also take part in local community events such as Garden and Arts and Christmas Starts Here, and Singing Club usually visit several local care homes to sing at Christmas time.

If you would like any further information regarding music lessons from the peripatetic teachers, or other musical opportunities available at the school, please do not hesitate to talk to the school office.
