At St Peters we highly value the contribution of PE to the health and well being of our children. We strongly believe that providing our children with a varied curriculum and huge range of extra-curricular activities promotes positive benefits in terms of concentration, motivation and development of self esteem. These in turn directly impact on all aspects of learning.
Many teacher and teaching assistants have a real passion and commitment to physical activity. Staff members voluntarily give up their time each week to run a huge range of after school clubs for both KS1 and KS2 including; netball, rounders, dance, football, stoolball, tag rugby, athletics, cricket and yoga.
There are also clubs run by outside agencies available for the children, including; tennis and karate.
The PE curriculum is carefully followed to include a programme of dance, gymnastics, swimming, balls skills and athletics. The emphasis is very much on learning and developing skills. There are many opportunities for the children to experience competition in both intra-school and inter-school events. Sports Day is a very special event, involving all children and staff. Parents are invited to celebrate and join their children for a picnic lunch. Pupils in their final year have a residential outdoor activity week on the Isle of Wight.
The School has a lovely playing field, including a cricket strip with nets and two football pitches. We have two netball courts, a basketball court and an outdoor table tennis table. We were very proud to open our new all weather running track ‘St Peter’s Metres’ in the Autumn. All classes run on this as a daily event and children are encouraged to use it during lunch breaks. We also have a large hall which has a range of gymnastic equipment, including wall bars.
We are very lucky to have close links to nearby Henfield tennis, football and cricket clubs.
We are very proud of our sporting achievements so far this year. St Peter’s were overall locality champions in netball, football and cross country. Our netball team went on to win the locality tournament, beating nine of the best schools from West Sussex. We are now going on to represent the Southern Area at the Sussex School Games in June. We have also competed in swimming galas, benchball and indoor athletic tournaments within our locality finishing second place in many of these. We are looking forward to upcoming events in the summer term in rounders, cricket, athletics and tennis.
We are very lucky to have additional funding from the government to enable us to enhance PE at St Peter’s. Please see Sports funding link for more information.
